On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

At 11:11 on 11/11, I salute all veterans and active duty military for the important and difficult jobs they did and do, and the sacrifices they give. There are several decorated vets in my family and I honor and admire them all year long.

Back in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a stop to hostilities was declared, ending World War I. An armistice to cease the fighting on the Western Front was signed by the Allied powers and Germany. President Woodrow Wilson immediately proclaimed the day "Armistice Day," kicking off the annual c...ommemoration on November 11. But over the years, with veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day — a day reserved to honor veterans returning from all wars. But 11/11 still represented the end of the Great War in the public's mind, and the date stuck.

The 11th Hour: The Date Behind Veterans Day

While most know that Veterans Day honors those who have served in the military, the meaning behind its exact date (November 11) may not be so familiar. Here's the backstory:

Back in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a stop to hostilities was declared, ending World War I. An armistice to cease the fighting on the Western Front was signed by the Allied powers and Germany.

President Woodrow Wilson immediately proclaimed the day "Armistice Day," kicking off the annual commemoration on November 11. But over the years, with veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day — a day reserved to honor veterans returning from all wars. But 11/11 still represented the end of the Great War in the public's mind, and the date stuck.

In 1921, unidentified dead from the war were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., Westminster Abbey in London, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The tradition to honor those killed in the war but never identified continues every year in the U.S. The ceremony is held at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Congress designated Veterans Day as a legal holiday in 1938, and since then, most Americans have come to know it as a day for store sales and parades. Yahoo! Searches on the holiday have already surged on the Web. People want to know "veterans day history," "veterans day closings," veterans day sales," and "veterans day free meals."

EVERY DAY SHOULD BE VETERANS DAY, BECAUSE THEY MAKE THE OTHER DAYS POSSIBLE.

Dreaming Of A Black Gold Christmas?

  • Nov. 11th, 2009 at 8:13 AM

I know some folks are having DT’s because they are out of Bootblack Crack….Black Gold. I only have one can left for myself. Is there a 12-step program for this?

Seriously….the only thing holding me back from making more Black Gold is cash flow. Two teenagers with bottomless pit stomachs and those pesky bills that come in the mail have kept me from ordering more base supplies to make Black Gold. Some of the bootblacks at ICBB said that they were willing to pre-order and pre-pay so that I could make more Black Gold for them. I dislike this method but if folks are willing…..

So if you are interested in pre-paying for Black Gold and can do so within the next week I can order the supplies and make a few batches and ship it out the first week of December.

Send me an email (Elegant   @   FantasiesInLeather   dot    com) with your shipping address and how many cans you want. I’ll calculate the shipping cost and send you a Paypal invoice. If payment is not received by Tuesday November 17 I cannot guarantee your order. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.

  • Black Gold - $8 per can (plus shipping)  Please describe this product as ‘similar to Huberd’s that has been tinted black’. This product IS NOT endorsed by the Huberd's company. We do not sell this or other bootblack supplies on our website.
  • Huberd’s (The Original) - $6 per can
  • Shipping TBD based on zip code and # cans ordered.

So here we are… two days after a major release. And, for some reason I am not super busy… shhhhhhhhh…. Be very very quiet… what is that noise? Nothing… Really NOTHING… I mean no major fires…. Where oh where are the fires…. There are none… LOL I am so not sure what to make of that fact! Go QA Team!!!

Anyway, let’s see… what else is going on.

I have two more steps to fulfill and then I return to full NORMAL life… Almost… just not 100% there yet.

I have been taught a number of very important lessons recently. The main one… is live life for today. I am not promised tomorrow… and I can not change yesterday. Here I am today… live in it… love it and enjoy it.

I am super grateful for the friends I have. For the job I have. For the love of my life. I can not imagine what my life would have been life without him. I mean I honestly have to say it might have sucked. Well honestly I know it would have sucked. I am not sure what good fortune smiled upon me at Pride three years ago. But, here we are … married… home owners… calmed and life full of fun and love.

Super lucky girl that I am….

Anyway… one more class tonight… and then there is only one more step…. Oy… Why isn’t it over yet?

Quote Project #29

"Did you ever read the Bible, Katherine? Did you ever notice how, in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an Angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood... Would you ever REALLY wanna see an Angel?" -- Thomas, "The Prophecy" (1995)

Someone told me this last week.

"Just remember that when you are stirring the shit it's because you are trying to dissipate the odor of someone else's turd."

Whether you're in the mood for a creative challenge or you're short on time or attention span, this semi-addictive community is perfect for those who find flash fiction way long. Once you get the hang of it, you won't be able to stop. The prince turned into a frog. The girl ran home to mother. Tough to write. Easy to read. It's a double threesome of fun.
